Costings of our Low-to-No-Spend Weekday Meals

A record of our experiment to meal plan and keep costs down.  These are meals that we do normally eat so it is food that we enjoy - just now trying to do it at an even lower cost   :-)

Monday 
Roast Chicken Pieces and a Medley of  Roast Veggies

  • Chicken (Woolies Pack reduced by 30%, divided into three portions) 39.08
  • Rosa Tomatoes (Checkers, reduced price, 1/2 packet) R2.5
  • Potatoes (Checkers 2kg reduced to R15/3 meals) R5
  • Sweet Potatoes(3kg pocket @R22 /4 ) R5.5

  • Baby Corn (Checkers Reduced, 1/2 pack) R4

Tuesday 
Rice, Dhal, Cauliflower, Peas & Potato curry, Garden salad

  •  2 cups of Rice, rough estimate of 1.33 a cup(10kg@ R90/150g) - R2.66 
  • 1 cup of Dhal, rough estimate of 1.5 a cup (1kg @ R12/125g) - R1.50
  • Cauliflower, from the garden @ 50 cents a plant - R0.5
  • Peas, 1/2 cup (1kg @ R25/150g/2(1/5 cup)) - R1.87
  • Potato - R5
  • Garden Salad - FREE, assortment of leaves from the garden

Wednesday 
Rice, Dhal, Fried Fish and Chips

  • 2 cups of rice - R2.66
  • Dhal - leftovers - R0
  • Fried Fish - Bass catch - R0

Thursday 
Egg Chutney with Rice/Bread


  • Eggs (7 Eggs @ R40/30) - R9.33
  • Tomatoes (Checkers reduced R10 box) - R8
  • Rice (left over) R0, Bread @ R11 - R5.5

Friday
